May 7, 1999 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-99-016 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff in Atlanta, Georgia on this date.

SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS On May 5, 1999, at 7:48 a.m., Hatch Unit 2 had a main generator trip from 98 percent power due to an electrical fault. The generator trip caused an automatic reactor scram. All control rods fully inserted and all safety systems functioned properly. The electrical fault occurred between the main generator and the main output transformers. The main generator and isophase bus system have been partially tested and no problems have been identified. The licensee's continuing investigation han been hampered due to inclement local weather conditions.

The plant is being depressurized and the licensee will initiate shutdown cooling when pressure reaches approximately 100 psig. (See Event Report number 356676)

The resident inspectors will continue their independent inspection of the i licensee's investigation of this event and monitor the licensee's recovery actions. This information is current as of 8:00 a.m., on May 7, 1999.

The State of Georgia has been notified.
