This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Georgia Power Company (Docket Nos. 50-321 and 50-366)

Subject:

DISCHARGE OF WEAPON BY SECURITY OFFICER On Tuesday, February 22, a construction employee had a fight with a Georgis Power Company (GPC) employee somewhere on company property, but not in the vicinity of either nuclear unit (Unit 1 in operation, Unit 2 under construc-tion). The construction employee was fired and directed to leave company property. While departing in his private vehicle, the fired worker attempted to run down a GPC security guard. The guard dodged the car, drew

./ - his weapon and fired one shot at the tires of the receding car. The vehicle

{ ) was not hit.

The guard has been suspended for 30 days for drawing his weapon when his life was not in danger (the car was already past him). The construction worker was subsequently arrested on charges resulting from the fight.

There has been no publicity and none is expected. j Region II received telephone notification of this occurrence at 1120 hours0.013 days <br />0.311 hours <br />0.00185 weeks <br />4.2616e-4 months <br /> on February 28. The licensee reportedly attempted to contact the Region II

Security and Investigation Section on February 22, but when told that the g members of that Section were out of the office until February 28, the licensee representative did not consider the item important enough to O advise other members of the Regional office. }

The licensee has been asked to ensure that all future incidents are ,

Promptly reported to the Region, whether or not his normal Regional safeguards contacts are available.
