SUBJECT:

MEN TRAPPED IN CONTAINMENT On September 23, 1978 following an inspection in the drywell with the reactor operating at low power, three men were trapped in containment j

for approximately one hour and 20 minutes due to a door interlock i

malfunction.

Rescue was effected through the control rod drive removal j

j hatch.

One man who had a history of high blood pressure was sent to the hospital for checkup, but was not admitted.

No contamination or over-gl

exposures were involved. Georgia Power Company is considering modifications

to the interlock which prevented opening the outer airlock door.

Media interest is expected due to a local newspaper article on a similar event at this facility in June 1977.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC is planning a news release.

The resident inspector is onsite.

OSHA 4

and the State of Georgia have been notified.
