This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by OIE staff as of 3:00 p.m. on the date of this notification.

CRACKS IN 4 - INCH RECIRCULATION PIPING Georgia Power Company notified Region II by telephone on December 13, 1975, that two apparent cracks were identified in the 4 - inch diameter i
bypass loop around the loop "A" recirculation pump discharge valve.
The cracks were identified during a scheduled inservice inspection.
r The cracks are located in the 4 - inch pipe $n the heat affe'eted zone h
of the upstream weld of the pipe tee, upstream of the bypass loop
~f isolation valve.
The cracks are transverse and approximately one
~
inch long. The cracking is from the inside and had not perforated
(-
the pipe.
l The licensee is replacing the pipe tee and one foot of 4 - inch pipe.
All other wolds in loop "A" and loop "B" 4 - inch bypass lines were inspected and no other crack indications were identified.
A Region II inspector with metallurgical background has been dispatched to the Hatch site to evaluate the cracking problem and the proposed fix.
