This is in respcnse to the NEC letter of August 16, 1979 to Mr. E. A.

Borgmann from Mr. S. A. Varga. With regard to operator training to recognize an ATWS event and to take mitigating action, cold license operator candidates have been presented with an indepth review of the entire ATWS matter including Items 1 and 2 of the August 16 letter. All candidates are scheduled to perform a simulated ATWS drill using Emergency Operating Procedure (EOP) , OP.EOP.05,

" Anticipated Transient Without Scram", a copy of which is encloscd. Classroem training was conducted by senfor licensed General Electric Ccepany training instructors at the Zirrer site during the sumer of 1979. Cold license candidates also participated in three - 8 hour9.259259e-5 days <br />0.00222 hours <br />1.322751e-5 weeks <br />3.044e-6 months <br /> simulator refresher training days at the Morris, Illinois BWR Training Center this pact summer where ATWS situations were imposed. The candidate's ability to recognize an ATES event and take appropriate action was evaluated. Whenever simulator -atr=f.ning is utilized, ATWS cituations will be part of the totnl prcgram.
