RE: WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 INSPECTION REPORT 81-13 SOCKET WELDS W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, 81-13 Our letter of March 8, 1983 (QA-2290) and your response of March 21, 1983 addressed item of noncompliance 81-13-05, verification of socket weld disengagement.

Paragraph 4 of our letter made reference to future Code revisions anticipating deletion of statements pertaining to " gap" requirements. This issue has been further clarified. To assist you in the subsequent inspection mentioned in your letter, we are providing the following information relative to pending changes in the ASME Code, paragraph NX 4427. Based upon Code Committee meeting notes, code changes are expected which will:

1. Delete the gap dimension on Figure NX 44271, and;

' 2. Make it clear that the gap need not be'present after welding.

i Based upon the information contained in our letter of March 8 and the clarification above, CG&E continues to believe that this matter has been satisfactorily resolved. We understand that this matter has been assigned to your Division of Engineering and Technical Inspection (DETI) for evaluation. In an effort to ensure prompt close-out of this item of noncompliance, we would like to schedule a meeting to discuss this matter at your earliest convenience. Please advise us of a date when this
