OF TELEPHONE CALL ON JUNE 28, 2010, PERTAINING TO THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION OF THE DIABLO CANYON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 This memorandum documents a telephone call with Philippe Soenen and Terry Grebel, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), on June 28, 2010. The purpose of the telephone call was to obtain clarification on various aspects of the compressed gas system. During the telephone call, the staff asked if PG&E has an evaluation that assesses the effects of a failure of the spent fuel pool gate seal on water level within the pool. PG&E stated that it does have an evaluation and will make it available for NRC's viewing. Additionally, the staff inquired about three components (LCV 12, PDP YM459, and PO459) that appear to have backup air to the compressed air system. The applicant stated that LCV 12 goes to a condenser makeup line and backup air is provided only for operational purposes; there is no safety function. The other two components go to an abandoned positive displacement pump and are no longer used.
