DELAY OF STARTUP TO REPAIR REACTOR COOLING WATER LEAKAGE On May 16, 1986, licensee personnel entered the Unit I reactcr containment to investigate the source of reactor coolant system leakage of approximately 20 gallons per minute. The unit was in a hot shutdown mode preparing to start up.
During the containrent entry, the licensee determined that the packing had failed in one of two pressurizer spray valves. The leakage from the failed packing was carried by the valve packing drain line to the pressurizer relief tank. The leakage caused a sight glass in the drain line to rupture and the rupture disk to fail in the pressurizer relief tank.
The unit is being placed in cold shutdown to repair the valve packing, the sight glass, and the pressurizer relief tank rupture disk.
The licensee declared an unusual Event under its emergency plan at 5:30 a.m., May 16,1986.
The resident inspector is on site monitoring the licensee's activities.
The State of Illinois will be notified.
