Subject:

SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR STEAM LEAK At 11:22 a.m. (CDT), July '22, 1988, with the unit at 98 percent power, a steam leak was identified in the vicinity of the extraction steam piping between the high pressure turbine and a bank of feedwater heaters.

The licensee decreased power to 40 percent and removed piping insulation to locate the leak. The licensee subsequently initiated a centrolled shutdown (the unit tripped at 10 percent power) and conducted an ultrasonic inspection of the 16-inch diameter piping.

Preliminary results indicate the pipe wall thickness in the vicinity of the leak had been reduced to .087 inches from the 0.5-inch nominal wall thickness. Additional examination revealed pipe wall degradation at other locations on the extraction steam piping. .

The unit will be down for more than 48 hours5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
while the licensee repairs the steam leak and those portions of the piping which exhibit a wall thickness of less than 0.3 inches.
