PUBLIC ALLEGATION OF UNNECESSARY RADIATION EXPOSURE ,

At a public meeting held in Zion, Illinois on July 13, 1978, a Ceco

! employee alleged that manual operation of the system is causing i unnecessary radiation exposure to CECO employees. For several months, >

the radwaste solidification system has been operated manually, rather  ;

I than remotely as designed, due to equipment malfunctions. Region III i

(Chicago) has been aware of the equipment problems through the routine  !

inspection program. The licensee has been working for some time on i

• modifications to restore and improve the remote operability of the M l system.

I The concerns regarding alleged unnecessary exposures had not been j id$tified until they were discussed publicly at a meeting called by } l j State Senator Larry Leonard in Zion, Illinois on July 13, 1978. l Although no press releases have been issued, the n'ews media has learned '

of the issue and has puMicized the allegation. Inspectors have Seen dispatched to the sitt to investigate the matter.
