ANNOUNCEMENT OF PERMANENT SHUTDOWN OF ZION STATION On January 15, 1998, the licensee announced that it will permanently shut down the Zior. Nuclear Power Station. Unit 1 has been shut down since February 1997, and Unit 2 has been shut down since September 1996.

The utility said the decision was based on economics. Its announcement stated: " Zion Station will not be able to produce competitively priced power in a deregulated marketplace over the remaining useful life of the plant." The utility will take a write-off of about $515 million in unrecoverable Zion costs associated with the shutdown.

The utility plans to maintain the plant in SAFSTOR decommissioning mode until about 2014. SAFSTOR involves placing the facility in safe stable condition and maintaining it for future dismantling and decontamination.

More detailed decommissioning plans are being developed.

The utility expects to reduce the plant staff over the next year from the current level of 800 employees to 150 to 200 employees.

The resident inspectors and other regional and headquarters staff members will continue to monitor activities at the plant site during the transition period from operation to decommissioning status.

The State of Illinois has been informed.

The utility issued a news release and scheduled a news conference to discuss the shutdown decision.

Region III (Chicago) was' notified of this decision about 8 a.m. CST on January 15, 1998. This information is current as of 10 a.m. on January 15, 1998.
