Zion Unit 2 Notification of an Unusual Event -

Zion, IL 60099 Alert ,

Site Area Eirergency
. Docket No. 50-3M General Emergency  ;

X Not Applicable Subj:ct: NOBIE GAS IN CONTROL ROOM Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (CDT), September 11, 1986, a small unplanned release of radioactive nob 10 gas was detected in the auxiliary building and in the control room.

Thf licensee reported that approximately 8.2 curies of noble gases---primarily xenon---

were released in the event. The maximum stack release rate reported by the licensee was .

2.4 per cent of technical specifications.

4 There were no contaminations of plant personnel or building evacuations due to this incidert.

A release of this magnitude does not represer.t a health or safety hazard.

  • According to the licensee, the gases were apparently released frcm the waste gas collection system to the auxiliary building through a spent resin tank drain line. A malfunctioning level indicator on the spent resin storage tank apparently allowed the gas to exit from the drain line.

A aisaligned ventilation damper allowed the gases to enter the technical support center from  ;

th? auxiliary building. An open door between the technical support center and the control '

roon. provided the path for the gases to enter the control room.  ;

Th2 plant ventilation system cleared the gases to the atmosphere via the monitored auxiliary building vent.

r R:gion III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action.

The State of Illinois will be notified.

This information is current as of 3 p.m. (CDT), September 15, 1986.  ;
