MINOR FIRE IN TURBINE BUILDING At about 8 a.m. (CST) on March 27, 1987, a fire was discovered in a cardboard box in the Unit 1 turbine building. The box contained noncombustible piping insulation. The fire was extinguished by the plant fire brigade using a fire extinguisher. Smoke was observed throughout a major portion of the Unit 1 turbine building.

The Zion Fire Department was dispatched to the site, but was not needed upon arrival. The cause of the fire was thought to be a discarded cigarette.

Unit 1 was in operation at the time of the fire, but operations were not affected.

The licensee declared an unusual event under its emergency plan. The classification was terminated at 8:15 a.m. (CST).

There was local news media interest in the fire.

The State of Illinois has been notified.

Region III (Chicago) was notified of the fire by the resident inspector at about 8:30 a.m.
