_ Not Applicable /8M pu - J ,it Up Subj:ct: SHUTDOWNTOREPAIRDIESELGENERATOR-----(UPDATE) t The licensee is continuing its investigation to determine the cause of the high bearing tempsrature which resulted in the comon emergency diesel generator for the two units to be d clared inoperable on March 5, 1990. Each unit also has two dedicated diesel generators.

Tha two units were placed in Hot Shutdown on March 1 as required by the Technical Specifications. The Region III (Chicago) Regional Administrator issued a Temporary Waiver of Compliance on March 2, 1990, permitting the units to remain in Hot Shutdown until March 6 rath2r than going to Cold Shutdown. With the concurrence of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, this. Waiver was extended on March 6, 1990, for six days, for Unit 2 only to permit it to perform necessary safety system surveillance tests prior to its refueling outags. This extension will prevent the licensee from subjecting Unit 2 to an additional thermal cycle on the primary system. The unit will be placed in Cold Shutdown on March 12, 1990, for the refueling outage, originally planned to begin March 22. Unit I has been p d in Cold Shutdown for a short maintenance outage kb icensee intends to examine the comon diesel's bearings for possible damage to dritsrmine the cause of the high temperature readings. Region III will continue to monitor the licensee's activities.

-Tha State of Illinois will be informed of this updated information. (This information has been reviewed with licensee management.)
