Dear Mr. Kingsley:

By letter. dated November 9,1998, the Commonwealth Edison Company (Comed, the' licensee) submitted its evaluation of an indica *. ion in the base metal of a Braidwood Station, Unit 1, main steam piping system elbow. The indication was identified during the preservice, baseline i examination program for welds which were newly installed during the steam generator l replacement outage. l Comed concluded that the laminar indication was from initial construction of the elbow and has

. been in service since 1988. Comed evaluated the indication in accordance with IWC-3122.4

. and determined that the indication would not affect the structural integrity of the main steam system piping.

The NRC staff performed an Initial review of Comed's evaluation and did not identify any '

. technical issues. The NRC does not intend to take further action en this subject at this time.

I By letter dated November 9,1998, the Commonwealth Edison Company (Comed, the licensee) submitted its evaluation of an indication in the base metal of a Braidwood Station, Unit 1, main i steam piping system elbow. The indication was identified during the preservice, baseline examination program for welds which were newly installed during the steam generator replacement outage.

Comed concluded that the laminar indication was from initial construction of the elbow and has been in service since 1988. Comed evaluated the indication in accordance with IWC-3122.4

' and determined that the indication would - I affect the structural integrity of the main steam system piping.

The NRC staff performed an initial review of Comed's evaluation and did not identify any technical issues. The NRC does not intend to take further action on this subject at this time.
