NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-456/98016(DRS)

Dear Mr. Kingsley:
On January 21,1999, the NRC completed an inspection at your Braidwood Generating Station,
Unit 1. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they relate to
the engineering and maintenance activities for the replacement of the steam generators for
compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations. Within these areas, the inspection
consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with
personnel, and observation of activities in progress.
Based on the results of the inspection, no violations were identified. Overall, your staff properly
implemented the special process procedures and work instructions. Procedural and equipment
improvements, based on lessons learned from the Byron steam generator replacement project,
were evident and effectively implemented. This was particularly apparent in the tendon
replacement work. The welding of the steam generator piping, both large and small bore, had
relative few repairs which resulted in increased inspectibility. These improvements
demonstrated a dedication to a high quality product which enhanced the safety culture and plant
reliability.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC'S " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter, the
enclosures, and your response to this letter will be placed in the NRC Public Document
Room (PDR).
