Dear Mr. Kingsley:

i l

We recently received the enclosed Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  !

correspondence, transmitting the FEMA evaluation report for the May 20,1998 Emergency I Preparedness Exercise at the Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station.

There was one Deficiency and three Areas Requiring Corrective Action (ARCA) identified as a ,

result of this exercise. Additionally one previous ARCA remains unresolved for the State of Illinois. The Deficiency was assessed against Grundy County for not being able to issue an Emergency Broadcast System message within the prescribed 15-minute time frame.

Subsequently, this Deficiency was corrected during a remedial exercise held on August 6, 1998. The three ARCA's were identified against Will, Kankakee and Grundy Counties.

We fully recognize that any corrective actions to b6 implemented may involve parties and political institutions that are not under your direct control. Nonetheless, we expect that J assistance, if appropriate, will be extended.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosed FEMA correspondence will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. I 1

Sincerely, l 1

a es' . ree , Chief Plant Support Branch 1
