Docket No.: 50-483  :

Mr. D. F. Schnell MAR 101986 Vice President - Nuclear Union Electric Company Post Office Box 149 St. Louis, Missouri 63166

Dear Mr. Schnell:

Subject:

Authorization to Use ASME Code Case N-416 for Callaway The NRC staff has completed its review of your request dated February 20, 1986 which requested authorization to use ASME Code Case N-416 for application at the Callaway Plant.

Code Case N-416 " Alternative Rules for Hydrostatic Testing of Repair or Re-placement of Class 2 Piping Section XI, Division 1", is an acceptable Code Case which is approved as written with no additional requirements other than those specified in the Code Case. The Code Case is expected to be endorsed by the NRC in a future revision of Regulatory Guide 1.147, " Inservice Inspec-tion Code Case Acceptability, ASME Section XI, Division 1".

Code Case N-416 may, therefore, be used at the Callaway Plant within the limitations stated in the " Inquiry" and " Reply" sections of the Code Case.

Furthermore, the use of the Code Case should be documented in a future Amendment to the FSAR for Callaway.

Sincerely, ts/
