SUBJECT:

CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT.1 - CLOSEOUT OF GENERIC LETTER 97-06,

" DEGRADATION OF STEAM GENERATOR INTERNALS" (TAC NO. MA0901) {

i

Dear Mr. Randolph:

l

'" - LOn December 31,1997lthe staff issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-06, " Degradation of Steam Generator Internals." The purpose of the GL was to alert licensees of pressurized water  !

- reactors (PWRs) to damage to steam generator internals at foreign and U.S. PWRs, and obtain L information that we aid enable the staff to verify that the condition of licensees' steam generator

' intemals comply with the current licensing bases for their respective facilities.

, By letter dated March 30,< 1998, (ULNRC-03790), you responded to GL-97-06 for Callaway Plant, Unit 1. In that letter, you provided a discussion of the program to detect degradation of Lsteam generator internals.at Callaway and referenced the Westinghouse WCAP report  !

1WCAP-15002, Revision 1," Evaluation of EdF Steam Generators Intemals Degradation -Impact i Lof Causal Factors on Westinghouse 51 Series Steam Generators," dated December 1997. You  ;

provided the secondary side intemal degradation types in Westinghouse-design steam generators and the inspection summary for the steam generators at Callaway. _ You also stated

. that Callaway has Westinghouse Model F steam generators and an evaluation for this model, j similar to that done in WCAP-15002, would be completed at a later.date. During a conference call on September 22,1999, it was stated that this later report had been completed. . The letter provided the basis that the steam generators at Callaway comply with the current licensing bases for the' plant.- 1 T .

- The staff's review of your response did not identify any new concems with the condition of the j

' steam genotor intemals at Callaway and did not identify any concems with the inspection

~

' practices employed at Callaway to detect degradation of steam generator intemals. The staff, l J therefore, concludes that your response to the GL provides reasoneNe assurance that the '

condition of your steam generator intemals are in compliance with the current licensing bases )

. for the Callaway Plant, Unit .1.

, - The detailed technical basis that supports the staff's determination for all facilities will be published in a NUREG report to be published in December 1999. This completes the staff's r  : effort on TAC No. MA0901; i)
