SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ELECTROSLEEVE INSTALLATION IN SAMPLE TUBES

Dear Mr. Galford:

The NRC staff is reviewing an amendment application by Union Electric Company that would approve the Electrosleeve repair method for Callaway Plant, Unit 1 for two operating cycles. As part of this revied, the staff has been evaluating the behavior cf an Electrosleeve repaired i steam generator tube during severe accident conditions. To further support these evaluations, the staff is planning to sponsor testing of Electrosleeved tubes to better understand the behavior of the Electrosleeve material under severe accident conditions. The type of tests the i sleeved tubes would be subjected to have not been finalized. The testing would be performed by Argonne National Laboratories (ANL) under a contract with the NRC.

The staff proposes to have ANL provide to Framatome Technologies, Incorporated (FTI),

sixteen (16) unflawed 7/8-inch steam generator tubes of a length appropriate for the ANL test equipment. The staff requests that FTl install a four-inch Electrosleeve in the center of each of

' these tubes in accordance with your field implementation procedures. Dr. Joseph Muscara of the NRC's Office of Nuclear Regulatcry Research, telephone number (301) 415-5844, will be the contact to arrange to have ANL ship you the sixteen unflawed tubes.

Prior to releasing the ANL test results to the public docket, the NRC staff will provide a copy to FTI, and ask that FTl review the results for information considered proprietary to FTI. The NRC  !

staff will consider your response prior,to release of the test results to the public docket.

Please contact me at (301) 415-3021 to confirm your participation in this matter.
