HA'ICH NUCLEAR PLANP UNIT 2 REQUEST FOR EXPEDITED ACPION ON EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION DEADLINE EXTENSION REQUEST Gentlemen:

By letter dated March 1,1985 (NED-85-061) , Georgia Power Coupany (GPC) recuested an extension of the 10 CFR 50.49 (g) eculpment cualification deadline for the Plant Hatch Unit 2 Drywell Hydrogen (H 2) and Oxygen (02) analyzers, from March 31, 1985 to November 30, 1985. Due to a recent change in the sched21e for the upcoming refueling outage at Unit 2, GPC is in urgent need of relief from this March 31, 1985 deadline, in order to avoid premature shatdown of the plant.

At the time that our letter (NED-85-061) was albnitted, Unit 2 was sched11ed to begin its next refueling outage in late March,1985. Since the plant was sched21ed to remain shatdown for about eight weeks, this meant that GPC effectively had until late May, 1985, to resolve this particxilar l

deadline issue with the NRC, witholt inpacting schedaled plant operation, i

However, the schediled shitdown date for that oatage was recently changed to j

April 5, 1985, which falls beyond the cxtrrent deadline for the H2 and O2 t

analyzers.

GPC therefore reglests that expedited relief be granted from the current ecpipntnt cualification deadline for the Plant Hatch Unit 2 H2 and O2 analyzers.- This relief would not create any undue hazard to the public health and safety based on the Justification for Contin 1ed Operation (JOO) l previaasly albnitted, which justifies plant operation using these analyzers with inconplete cualification.
