SUBJECT:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit No. 1, Report of Significant Deficiencies; Electrical Conduit Seismic Hangers Docket No. 50-289

Dear Dr. Knuth:

You were notified on July 23, 1973, of a situation which could be con-sidered reportable under 10CFR50.55 (e)(1)(1), " Conditions of Construction Permits."

This situation related to seismic electrical conduit hangers.

DESCRIPTION A recent audit indicates that the Seismic I hanging conduit does not have appropriately approved detail. Detailed sketches of conduit hengers had been forwarded to the Engineer in June of 1971 for approval, but such approval was withheld pending additional information. By some oversight, this additional information was never sent to the Engineer. In the interim, conduit has been hung in accordance with thoce details.

CORRECTIVE ACTION A thorough review of conduit hangers is now in progress spearheaded by a task force consisting of:

Gilbert Associates Structural Engineering Department United Engineers Electrical Ccnstruction Department United Engineers Quality Control Department GPU Quality Assurance Department The task force is charged with inspecting and analyzing the Seismic I conduit installation to assure their acceptability. Any corrections to the present supports will be made with the results presented by this group.
