Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-289 Inspection of Reactor Internals After Hot Functional Testing

Dear Dr. Knuth:

On April 3, 1974, a situation which may be considered reportable under 10CFRSC.55(e) was noted during inspection of the reactor vessel internals after hot functional testing.

Description of Incident During post hot functional inspect ion of the reactor internals, a 3/4" carbon steel nut was found laying on top of the lower grid assembly at the interface of core positions L-2 and M-3.

Corrective Action Taken Photographs of the nut and surrounding area were taken before removal from the internels. A detailed inspection of core internals did not reveal any damage. Additional inspections and investigations are in pro-gress. We will inform you of the results (f these inspections.
