Subject:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-289 Nuclear Service River Water Pu=p 13 Motor Failure

Dear Dr. Knuth:

You were notified en October 10, 1973, of a situation which could be considered reportable under 10CFR50.55(e)(1)(iii), " Conditions of Construction Permits." This situation involved the failure of the :Iuclear Service River Water Pump 1B motor.

DESCRIPTION OF TFE SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY While the Nuclear Service River Water System was being flushed prior to turnover to the Cvner, the :IR-P-1B =ctor tripped after running for a period of approximately two (2) hours. Prior to the failure of this =cter, it appeared to be running nor= ally, drawing 157 amps with 168 amps being full lead current.

CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKE'I Since the system was not needed for plant support, no i==ediate corree-tive action was necessary. The =oter was sent to the vendor for inspection and repair.

ENGINEERING EVALUATION The subject motor had been run en May 15, 1973, during the initial start of pump NR-P-1B, but had been shut devn after cne (1) hour due to noisy operatien. The noise was fcund to be a length of rope tangled in the pu=p.

The =oter then sat en biceks until Septe=ber 13, 1973, waiting for the repair of pump iR-P-13. At this time it was mounted in place of the =cter on NR-F-1C (failure of the =oter for !!R-P-1C was the subject of our letter to you dated August 20, 1973) where it was run for approximately four (h) hcurs 1 07" 1559 344'

A Dr. D. F. Enuth November 9, 1973 to complete the flush and hydro of this part of the system. The motor was shut down because of 18 mils vibration at the tcp of the motor while ecupled to the pu=p. Uncoupled, vibraticn was found to be 5 =ils.

The motor aas then =eggered and moved back to the repaired :iR-P-1B where it burned out after two (2) hours of operation.

Disassembly of the motor at the manufacturer's shop (Westinghor.se) revealed a turn to turn short at the top of the stator opposite the terminal box. The =otor was repaired and returned to the site. However, an a result of improper crating and handling during shipping, the motor was severely damaged and returned to the manufacturer.

a Very truly yours, s (' l
