UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 November 4, 2013 Mr. Adam C. Heflin, Senior Vice President Union Electric Company P.O. Box 620 Fulton, MO 65251

SUBJECT:

SCHEDULE REVISION FOR THE SAFETY REVIEW OF THE CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT 1, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAG NOS. ME7708 AND ME7716)

Dear Mr. Heflin:

By letter dated December 15, 2011, Union Electric Company (Ameren Missouri) submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations {10 CFR) Part 51 and 10 CFR Part 54, to renew operating license NPF-30 for the Callaway Plant, Unit 1 (Callaway),

for review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff. By letter dated May 1 0, 2013, Ameren Missouri requested to postpone the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards subcommittee meeting to a later date due to delays in Callaway's current refueling outage (RFO) No. 19 and its needs to focus on its completion. This letter is to inform you of a change in the review schedule for the Callaway license renewal review.

The staff has completed its assessment of the challenges presented during Callaway's RFO No. 19 and has determined that they have no impact on the license renewal safety review.

However, the staff notes that to support the revised schedule your responses to the staff's requests for additional information (RAis) must be completed and provided in a timely manner.

The RAis are regarding: ( 1) National Fire Protection Association*805 gap analysis; (2) reactor vessel internals program action items 1, 7, and 8; and (3) internal surtaces and coatings operating experience. After receiving the RAI responses, the staff will review and incorporate the responses into its safety review. The timeliness of your responses is necessary to maintain the schedule, and any delay could result in additional revisions to the enclosed schedule with the potential of leaving milestone schedule dates to be determined.

The environmental review schedule is also being revised due to additional time needed for publishing. The environmental schedule has been updated to reflect a change in the date of the issuance of the draft supplemental environmental impact statement and subsequent environmental review milestones.

Enclosed is the staff's revised review schedule reflecting updates to both the safety and environmental reviews for the Callaway license renewal application (LRA). The NRC will continue to follow established review procedures and the enclosed schedule to complete the reviews required by 10 CFR Parts 51 and 54.

If you have any questions on the revised safety schedule, please contact Mr. Samuel Cuadrado de JesUs, project manager for the Callaway LRA safety review, by telephone at 301-415-2946 or by e-mail at samuel.cuadradodejesus@nrc.gov. If you have any questions on the revised environmental schedule, please contact Ms. Carmen Fells, project manager for the Callaway LRA environmental review, by telephone at 301-415-6337 or by e-mail at carmen. fells@ nrc.qov.

Sincerely, oh i, Director Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket No. 50-483
