OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT 1 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION February 12, 2014 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Union Electric Company (Ameren Missouri) held a telephone conference call on February 12, 2014, to discuss and clarify the responses to requests for additional information (RAIs) concerning the Callaway Plant, Unit 1 (Callaway), license renewal application (LRA).

December 20, 2013, Response to RAI Set No. 28 (LRA Amendment No. 28)

Discussion: The staff stated that it needed clarification on the Discussion column for item 3.3.1.128 on Table 3.3-1. Ameren Missouri understood and stated that clarification will be provided in a future letter to the staff.

The staff stated that Table 3.3.2-4 may have an error on the Note 3 assigned to one of the aging management review (AMR) items. Ameren Missouri agreed with the staff and stated that the AMR should have been assigned a Note 5. Ameren Missouri further stated that it will correct this error in a future letter to the staff.

The staff stated that several tables in Enclosure 2 include new AMR items that cite Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL) Report Items VII.C1.A-408a or VII.C1.A-409a, and it was unclear to the staff what the a at the end of these items meant. Ameren Missouri stated that these item numbers appeared to be erroneously duplicated in the staffs LR-ISG-2012-01 and LR-ISG-2012-02, and the a designation was Ameren Missouris method to differentiate the numbers. The staff stated that it will review the two ISGs to confirm the GALL Report Items numbering.

The staff stated that on page 57 of Enclosure 2 there are two AMR items that reference GALL Report Item VII.E5.A-41 and Table 1 Item 3.3.1.072. The two AMR items are assigned a Note A. The staff asked Ameren whether the references made are correct. Ameren Missouri stated that the reference to item 3.3.1.072 needs to be revised because that is the incorrect Table 1 Item. Ameren Missouri stated that it will provide the correction in a future letter to the staff.

The staff noted that on page 111 of Enclosure 2 an enhancement to the Fire Protection Program has been deleted. A portion of the deleted enhancement stated the following [p]rocedures will be enhanced to include visual inspections of the external surfaces of Halon fire suppression system components for excessive loss of material due to corrosion. However, Page 2 of the cover letter states the following [r]evised Commitment 9 to reflect completion of visual inspection of the Halon fire protection system components. It is not clear to the staff whether Ameren Missouri revised the Fire Protection enhancement and Commitment 9 because visual inspections were completed or because Callaway procedures were revised to include the visual inspections consistent with the original proposed enhancement to the Fire Protection Program.

Ameren Missouri stated that the changes made to the Fire Protection Program were a result of Callaways procedure being revised consistent with the original proposed enhancement.

Action: Ameren Missouri will provide clarifications in its next letter to the staff. The staff will review LR-ISG-2012-01 and LR-ISG-2012-02 to confirm the adequacy of the GALL Report Item referenced.
