SUMMARY

OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT 1 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION April 21, 2014 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Union Electric Company (Ameren Missouri or the applicant) held a telephone conference call on April 21, 2014, to discuss draft request for additional information (RAI) 3.3.2.29-1, Aging of concrete piping in the circulating water system (021), for concrete piping added to the scope of license renewal in the applicants Amendment 31 to its Callaway Plant, Unit 1 (Callaway),

license renewal application (LRA).

Discussion The staff noted that Ameren Missouri submitted license renewal application (LRA) Amendment 31 by letter dated February 14, 2014, which added new sections and tables for the circulating water system as a new system within the scope of license renewal. It also added new aging management review items for circulating water system concrete piping which would be inspected using the applicants Internal Surfaces in Miscellaneous Piping and Ducting Components and the External Surfaces Monitoring of Mechanical Components programs to manage aging effects.

The staff noted it was not clear on what inspection method(s) would be used for the detection of aging effects, and what parameter(s) would be monitored for the parameters monitored or inspected, program elements to address changes in material properties of internal and external surfaces of the concrete piping. In addition, the staff was unclear as to whether the mechanical aging management programs (AMPs) as proposed by the applicant included sufficient guidance for detection of the cited aging effects (cracking, loss of material, and changes in material properties) for concrete piping - which seemed to be more like structural components than piping components.

Some discussion was held as to whether the proposed AMPs represented the best fit for these concrete components.

The applicant indicated it would consider these points in light of the discussion and would request a follow-on conference call if needed.
