-U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 License kJ. DPR-35 Docket ko. 50-293 Clarification of NRC Safety Evaluation for 10 CFR 50. Appendix R. Items III.G.3 and III.L

Dear Sir:

Our review of the NRC Safety Evaluation for Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, Items III.G.3 and III.L provided in your letter dated November 2,1983 (BECo 1.83.267) identified an incorrect statement concerning the number of fuses to be removed should a fire occur in either the cable spreading room or the control room at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. Specifically, the safety evaluation states the following in the second paragraph of Section 2.3,

. Alternate Safe Shutdown Systems (Page 3).

By letters dated March 11, 1983 and July 22, 1983, the licensee stated that the procedures for shutdown from outs 9e the control room require the operator to verify breaker status on safety-related 480 volt load centers B1 and B2 and then remove the fuses (6 total, 3 fuses per load center) in the "close" or " trip" breaker circuits in order to prevent the breaker from changing position as a result of a fire affecting the control circuit of'the breaker.

In Attachment A to our letter dated July 22,1983 (BECo 83-194), we provided a list of all fuses that are planned to be removed in the event of a fire in either the cable spreading room or the control roon. As described in Note 2 of this attachment, both the trip and close fuses are to be removed at each of the six fuse locations listed. Therefore, a total of 12 fuses are planned to be removed (3 pairs of fuses per load center) and not a total of 6 fuses, as stated in the safety evaluation.

If you have any questions concerning this clarification, please contact us.

Very truly yours, 8403090147 840305 PDR ADOCK 05000293 IV 1 t mmb-7m F PDR ()
