DOCKET: 50-414 UNIT: Catawba 2 Date: 09/15/97 NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

MONTH: August,1997 Catawba Unit 2 began the month of August operating at 100% full power, ne reactor was manually tripped on 08/17/97 at 0130 due to spurious closure of steam generator "2D" main steam isolation valve which was caused by optical isolator failure. ne unit was placed on-line 08/l 8/97 at 2157. During power escalation, the unit held at 15% power from 08/18/97 at 2238 to 08/19/97 at 0045 due to nuclear instrumentation calibration, ne unit held at 19% power from 0105 to 0341 pending required heat up of main feedwater nozzles to greater than 250 degrees fahrenheit for nozzle swap. The unit returned to 100%

full power on 08/19/97 at 1640, and operated at or near 100% full power the remainder of the month.
