SUMMARY

January,1998 Catawba Unit I began the month of January in end of cycle 10 refueling outage. The refueling outage has
spanned a total of 37.75 days and was scheduled for 36 days. De outage was extended 1.33 days due to f

"Ill" velume control pump low oil pressure and 0.42 days due to additional head curve testing on "Ill" residual heat removal pump. The unit was placed on line 01/05/98 at 1610. During power escalation the i unit held at 15% power from 1759 to 1916 and at 18% power from 2000 to 2230 to soak main tu.9ine to perform turbine overspeed trip ter,t. The unit decreased power and held at 10% power for approximately 2 minutes w hen the main turbine overspeed trip test was performed on 01/06/98 at 0005. De unit was placed on.line 01.%/98 at 0500. De unit held at 20% power from 0630 to 1152 to swap main feedwater nozzles.

De unit held at 30% power from 1753 to 2355 due to required CICll power ascension testing. On 1

01/07/98 at 0719 the unit held at 49% power due to power range nuclear instrumentation system calibration and reduction of reactor coolant system fluoride concentration. The unit held at 58% power pending evaluation of power escalation ramp rate greater than 3% per hour. The unit continued power escalation.

The unit returned to 100% full power i on 01/09/98 at 1010 and operated at 100% full pow er until 01/16/98 at 0900 when the unit began decreasing power. De unit held at 30% power on 01/17/98 from 0630 to 2115 to evaluate / adjust steam generator "Ill" main feedwater regulator valve packing torque. The unit resumed power escalation and held at 80% power on 01/18/98 from 0330 to 0331 to further investigate steam generator "lB" level oscillations attributed to "lCF37" main feedwater valve. The unit began decreasing power and held at 30%

power from 0907 to 1514 to evaluate steam generator "Ill" main feedwater regulator valve "lCF37". He

, unit was taken off-line 01/18/97 at 1756 to repair steam generator "Ill" main feedwater valve "lCF37".

  • 2115. The unit returned to 100% power on 01/21/98 at 1745 and operated at or near 100% full power the remainder of the month.
