July 1, 1985 Docket Nos. 50-325/324 Mr. E. E. Utley Executive Vice President Carolina Power & Light Company Post Office Box 1551 Raleigh, North Carolina 27602

Dear Mr. Utley:

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 84-11 RE STAINLESS STEEL PIPING REINSPECTION Re: Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units 1 and 2 By letters dated June 1, and June 14, 1984, you submitted a response to Generic Letter 84-11. In the letters you indicated that reinspections of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) susceptible piping welds will be performed during the Brunswick Unit I refueling outage in 1985 and the Brunswick Unit 2 refueling outage in 1986, with the sample chosen in accordance with the criteria provided in Generic Letter 84-11 and using qualified (ultrasonic testing) UT personnel with capabilities demonstrated in accordance with IE Bulletin 83-02 and Generic Letter 84-11. You also stated that the special coolant leakage surveillance measures already implemented at the Brunswick plant and the remedial measures to be taken when cracks are discovered are consistent with those given in Attachments 1 and 2 to Generic Letter 84-11, respectively. Based on the above and our review of your letters, we conclude that Carolina Power & Light Company's (CP&L) piping inspection plan meets the guidelines in Generic Letter 84-11.
