Dear Mr. Keenan:

As requested by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, by letter dated May 29,1998, as supplementea by letters dated February 5 and May 17,1999, you submitted your assessment of the impact on operation of the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit 1, with crack indications of 2l11,6.36, and 1.74 inches in'three separate jet pump risers. During the Unit 1 in-vessel visual inspection (IWI) of the 10 jet pump risers, you identified the crack indications along the heat affected zone of the riser elbow at the RS-1 weld of jet pump numbers 7/8 (riser g

D),13/14 (riser G), and 19/20 (riser K). You stated that your assessment justified operation with this condition without repair for the next fuel cycle..

The NRC staff has issued the enclosed Safety Evaluation for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant,. Unit 1. The staff has concluded that operating'with this condition without repair for the next fuel cycle is acceptable. Please contact me if you have any questions.
