Gentlemen:

Byletterdated April 13,1998, the NRC requested additional information regarding Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) Company's response to Generic Letter 96-06, " Assurance of Equipment Operability and Containment Integrity During Design-Basis Accident Conditions," for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP), Unit Nos. I and 2. CP&L responded to this request by letters dated May 17,1998 (Serial: BSEP 98-0110), and July 30,1998 (Serial: BSEP 98-0154).

The July 30,1998, letter stated that CP&L will be participating in an industry collaborative project with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) to develop a generic technical basis to address the request for additional information related to the waterhammer issue. In the July 30,1998, letter, CP&L committed to providing an update on intended actions with respect to the EPRI/NEI effort by August 27,1999. At this time, the '

results of the EPRl/NEI effort have not yet been submitted to the NRC. CP&L requests a delay in providing an update on intended actions until 180 days after NRC approval of the generic technical basis. ,
