June 19, 1972 Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Director Division of Compliance United States Atomic Energy Commission 970 Broad Street Newark, New Jersey 07102

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

With reference to your letter dated June 9, 1972 concerning activities that appear to be in noncompliance with AEC requirements', Yankee has con-ducted a detailed review in the area outlined in the attachment to your letter.

The results of the detailed review indicate that there are no creas of noncompliance with AEC requirements.

During the 1970 refueling outage, provisions were completed for recir-culation of emergency cooling water to the reactor as outlined in Proposed Change No. 95 (approved by the Commission, November 4x ,1970). In addition, during our 1972 refueling out. age, Emergency Core Cooling System changes as outlined in Proposed Change 1o. 97 (approved by the Commission, April 4,1972) were completed.

The original Purification System and Saf ety Inj ection System were con-structed in accordance with the requirements of ANSI B31.1. The intent of Proposed Changes Numbers 95 anj 97 was to use and/or-relocate o'riginal system components'wherever possible. Relocated components such as M0V532 and MOV533, as well as other original system components, have been in service for over ten years. These valves were relocated to' accommodate the new system piping arrangements; the associated relocation welds complied with l the requirements of ANSI B31.7. Therefore, the relocation in no way affects the adaptability of these valves to the new system. Newly purchased caterial j was designed, fabricated, installed and tested in accordance with the re-quirements of ANSI B31.7, with exception of those components and pipes so noted in the amended Section 212.

Should you desire additional information, feel free to contact us.

Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPA.W f
