A) NRC letter (T.A. Ippolito) to Boston Edison Company (G.C. Andognini) dated September 18, 1979.
Dear Mr. Ippolitc:
Reference A) requested additional information concerning the loss of offsite power events at Pilgrim Unit /!1. In response to this request we have accumulated a complete offsite power outage history for Pilgrim I which contains responses to your specific questions. Also included is a brief description of our intended transmission line modifications (Attachment C), which when implemented, will minimize the frequency of simul-taneous 345Kv line outages due to lightning. If during your review of the attached information, you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Very truly yours,

ATTACHMENT C Sheet 1 of 1 DETAIL SPECIFICATION NO. 5888 FOR THE MODIFICATION OF THE PILGRIM LOOP 345kV LINES NO. 342 AND NO. 355 1.0 SCOPE This work consists of furnishing all supervision, labor, tools, equipment aad supplies required for and incidental to the following: 1.1 Install " fog-type" disc insulators on all structures f rom Route 3A to the Pilgrim Station Switch Yard, structures 40 through 48 and the station bridges. These structures are on our right-of-way #15, all within the Town of Plymouth, or within the Station #650 fence. This work consists of: 1.1.1 The removal of 18-20,000 lbs. M&E, disc type insulators per string en 5 tangent towers and replacing them with 18 " fog-type", 30,000 lbs. M&E, disc insulators. 1.1. 2 The removal of 18-30,000 lbs. M&E, disc type insulators per dead-end string en 4 dead-end structures and replacing them with 22 " fog-type", 30,000 lbs. M&E, disc insulators. 1.1. 3 Install cne 19b" Idler Strut Section into all existing Idler 5trut Insulater Assemblies. 1.2 Install 4 new 30,000 lbs. M&E, disc type insulators in each dead-end string to increase the total insulatica level from 16 discs to 22 discs. 1.2.1 Structures involved (all on R/W #15, Plymouth): 3 ridges (Jordca Rd & State Forest) 22
#1 25 #4 20 #9 32 #16 35 #17 37 1.2.2 This work will require the installation of new dead-end ccepression fittings en both sides of most structure (The exceptions are spans between the bridges and structures 1,16 and 17) and the lengthening of all jumper loops.
1.3 Rotate the phases of circuits No. 342 and No. 355 in acecrdance with drawing S4667. This work should be coordinated with the work described in sections 1.1 and 1.2 such that duplicate ccmpressions are unnecessary. This work will also require the simultaneous outage of both circuits. Structures involved are the bridges (2) at State Forest, structure #1, #16, bridges (4) at Jordan Rd, structures #17, 46, 47, 48 and the bridges (2) at Pilgrim Station. 4 i 1643 333}}
