RESPONSE

An audit has been conducted which included inspection of a sample of flanges and fittings in the following areas on McGuire Unit 2.

(a) Socket ueld flanges using greater than schedule 40 pipe for veld sice.

(b) Socket weld flanges using less than schedule 40 pipe for vel'd sice.

(c) Socket weld fittings using greater than schedule 40 pipe for weld size.

In regard to Item (a), a complete.rcinspection was made of socket weld flanges -

using greater than schedule 40 pipe. One hundred and eleven welds were inspected with forty-three rejects. Under Item (b) one hundred welds selected at random-were examined. Four of these welds were rejected.

One weld was .187 inches .

below the minimum requirements. The other three welds had spots ranging from 1

.313 in: hen to .016 inches below the minimum requirements. The audit of Item (c) inclu. led one hundred welds seiccted at random. Three of these welds were reported as belcw the minimum requirements. Upon reinspection, one of the

' welds was found to be acceptable, the other two had spots which were .031 inches and .1.23 inches below the minimum requirements.

Based on these results, we have concluded that additional sampling and inspection of welds is not warranted on McGuire Unit 2. All of the rejected welds have been documented on nonconforming item reports and will be repaired. These repairs will be .eheduled based on individual system availability.

Socket welds are also being reviewed for similar concerns on McGuire Unit 1.
