y Leneths were obtained for most fish harvested by interviewed anglers. For crappie, over half observed in the harvest were between 190 and 241mm (8 to 9 inches)(Figure 2). Thirty two percent oflargemouth bass harvested were at the legal size limit of 14 inches (356mm) while i

l approximately 51 percent oflargemouth bass harvest was under the 14 inch limit (Figure 3).

Current regulations allow for the harvest of two largemouth bass per day per angler under 14 inches. Striped bass harvest was dominated (75%) by fish just at or above the legal limit (20

)

to 24 inches,508 to 610mm)(Table 5-0).

I Of the estimated 751,823 fish caught 400,724 were released by anglers. For the three most preferred species, largemouth bass, crappie and striped bass, anglers released 89.4%,

28.6%, and 80.6% percent of their catch, respectively (Table 4-5)

Succeg Mglers fisiing for crappie had the highest success rate (harvest + catch and release per f

angler hour) of all fishermen with an estimated annual catch rate of 1.77 fish / hour (Table 6-1 thm 6-3).

Success rates were highest during fall for crappie fishermen, spring for largemouth bass fishing and varied little throughout the year for striped bass fishing, although 49 percent of the striped bass harvest occurred during spring. For all anglers during i

the survey the success rate was estimated at 1.18 fish per hour.

I Fishina expenses As part of the Lake Norman angler survey fishermen were asked to estimate their daily trip expenses. Tlic expenses estimated were for items to be consumed during that days trip i.e.

foci, food, bait, lodging. From these estimates a cost per angler hour by targeted species and type of fisherman, boat or bank were extrapolated. The total estimated expenditures during the survey were $1,598,640 of which largemouth bass fishermen accounted for $685,500 (Table 7-0).
