Dear 'ir. O'Reilly:

On September 10, 1979, a report wts made under the provisions of

  • 0 FE O.55(e) conce-ning the E.Prgency Diese! Generator Fan Cooling System.

During a review of equipment specifications and the subsequent analysis of.

local meteorological data, it was discovered that ambient temperature ranges exist which exceed the original design limits of the Fan Cooling System. This necessitates that seasonal blade pitch angle changes be made.

To eliminate this tiele consuming procedure, th6 manufacturer (Fairbanks Morse) engineered a modification to the current fan driva shaft coupling that will allow the Emergency Diesel Generator to operate throughout the year at a fixtd Slade pitch angle wit 50ut overloading the fan :' rive shaf t.

The above modification has been comoieteri on North Anna Units 1 t, 2 Emercancy Dies 31 G*rer1 tors and tha units satisf actonily tested in :lecordanca with t5e manufacturer's recommendations. It is also necessary to 'nake sassonal fluid coolant chinges. A 35 percent solution of ethylene glycol will be used +: ring the months when freezing could occur and treated water will be used during the sumer months for maximu'n cooling.

This letter is a final report on this subject. If additional information l is required for your review, please notify us. l Very truly yours, l i
