i This letter is to iriform you of a potential safety hazard for some % Sch 40 pipe j

shipped to two or our customers, Carolina Power & Light and Virginia Power Corp. This material has been found to have areas where the wall thickness 2

falls below the minimum allowed by the SA 312 specification.

When the material was cut by Virginia Power Cog at their North Anna site this j

condition was found. The minimum wall thickness of.099 had been violated.

Some of the readings were as low as.087.

A sample of this material has 1 --a returned to Sandvik Steel, the producer, in Scranton, PA, for evaluation.

The orders were for %, schedule 40, Pipe SA 312, type 304. Carolina Power

& Light, PO #8N7398CJ had one piece 23' 11" and PO #8P8410CJ had 2

)

pieces totaling 46' 11", all of this material came from heat #46989.

The Virginia Power Corp orders were #CNT-552587, CNT-556011, & CNT-558917 for one piece each of % schedule 40 Pipe, SA 312, type 304. Each piece was 22' to 23' 6" random length from heat #46989.

THE " DEFECT" IN QUESTION IS SOME 3/4" SCH 40 PIPING WHICH MAY HAVE WALL THICKNESS AS LOW AS.087" WHEN THE MINIMUM ALLOWED BY SA 312 SPECIFICATIONS IS.099".

THIS PIPING WAS SHIPPED TO CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT AND VIRGINIA POWER AND THE NORTH ANNA SITE DISCOVERED THIS CONDITION.

THEY HAVE RETURNED A SAMPLE OF MATERIAL TO THE PRODUCER, SANDVIK STEEL, FOR EVALUATION.

BOTH SHIPMENTS OF PIPING TO THE TWO CUSTOMERS HAD THE SAME HEAT #46989.

THE CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED.
