SUBJECT:
Diesel Generator Units d
Applied as Standby Power Suppliers for Nuclear Power j
Generating Stations DEFECT:
Degradation of control wiring insulation in the Engine (Fig. 2) and Generator Control Panels (Fig. 1) Turnished with models EMD645E4 - General Motors - diesel generator sets identified as the 999 or MP series.
These series utili=e an EMD A20 generator.
DISCUSSION:
Examination of the control wiring as reported by Bob Freeman of Growns Ferry has revealed that wires with a black insulation with a singlo yellow stripe (approx..010" wide) had experienced degre.dation of the insulation between the wire and outer Jacket.
The degraded insulation is cracked and tends to crumble when flexed.
The wire is approaching 25 years of age and the degradation appears to be age related.
The insulation on other Wiring in the panel does not appear to have degradation.
Other than the yellow stripe, there is no other identification.
The wire is #14A.WG. 19 Strand EMD P/N 82782 1.
RECOMMENDED CORRECTIVE ACTION:
The wire is in low voltage circuits and as long as the outer jacket remains intact, the inner insulation is contained.
The outer Jacket does not appear to have degraded.
As long as the outer jacket is intact, this inner insulation does not appear to pose en urgent probinm.
No electrical failures due to this insulation problem have been reported. However, it is recommended that owners of the EMD 999/MF types of diesel generators inspect this control wiring in the engine and generator cabinets.
The recommendation is that all control wire with black insulation containing the yellow strip be replaced at the earliest opportunity.
14AWG Nuclear grade SIS grede cen t rol wire is an acceptable replacemen t.
