Howard Kundinger engfn,,rfn, of the Chippewa and Tittabawassee River prepared Fei v. erunett for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of Executive oirector the review process for a proposed flood control project that was considered for construction in the area.

The survey, while containing 53 sites,does not rule out other sites in the area since it was oriented to narrow river margin strips where dikes were to be built. Lower case "y" and "z" are the closest sites to the Midland Nuclear Power Plant site. To  ;

my knowledge, no systematic, professional survey to j inventory cultural resources was carried out on the plant site. It is unfortunate, since it is common knowledge in the area that sites existed there prior to plant construction start-up. After the footings for the reactors were poured, I was invited to visit

'

the site with members of the Saginaw Valley Chapter l of the Michigan Archaeological Society. Even at -

i this late date, fire-cracked rock and a rew flint '

chios could be found in the area and some bone was ,

observed in one of the cuts near the Tittabawassee l River margin.

It is interesting that the site picked for the power plant contained both of the two most attractive features attracting settlement in the Saginaw Valley-an ancient lake margin (The Lake Lundy Beach) and the river levee of the Tittabawassee. This combination could have contained the full range of Great Lakes Prehistory! -

Letter to Dr. Curtis - Page 2 14 July 1978 My first survey in the vicinity was carried out on the property of my employer at the time -

the Chippewa Nature Center - and resulted in the establishment of one of Michigan's first archaeological districts (The Oxbow Archaeological District). The second survey resulted in the nomination of the Little Forks District which has been found eligible for National Register statis. This area adjoins the first district and includes the Corps' diking areas. I am afraid that a third district has been destroyed because of failure to call for or carry out a proper cultural inventory survey.

Sincerely, f
