References:

(1) B. H. Grier letter to W. G. Counsil dated February 8, 1979, forwarding I&E Bulletin 79-01.

(2) W. G. Counsil letter to R. Reid dated March 23, 1979.

Gentlemen:

Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2 Environmental Qualification of Class lE Equipment In accordance with the reporting requirements of Reference (1), Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) forwarded Reference (2) regarding certain stem-mounted limit switches (SMLS). It was noted that environmental qualification documenta-tion for the SMLS's provided in Reference (2) could not be produced. This letter is being docketed in fulfillment of the reporting requirements of Reference (1).

Recent investigations disclosed that environmentally qualified SMLS's with the appropriate documentation can be procured. Since the switches are installed on safety-related valves, it is possible that failure of these switches could adversely affect valve position indication and in some cases, valve operation.

It is noted that Millstone Unit No. 2 is currently shutdown, and it is the intention of NNECO to replace the SMLS's with qualified switches prior to the start of Cycle 3 operation scheduled for May, 1979.

Should material delivery delays or other factors preclude completion of the replacement of all SMLS's identified in Reference (2) until after the start of Cycle 3 operation, NNECO will supplement this submittal with such information and provide appropriate technical justification. In the absence of future correspondence on the subject, replacement will be completed prlor to the start of Cycle 3 operation.
