OIO During cold shutdown while in preparation for the Unit 3 Engineered Safeguards Test, 2 cracks were observed in the 4B charging pump suction

~O piping (4" type 304 stainless steel, schedule 10) adjacent to the weld between the suction piping and a drain line. The pump was removed from s'ervice. Two other charging pumps were operable, which satisfied the requirements of TS 3.6.b.l. Similar occurrences were reported in

~O LER 250-78-3 and 251-78-4.

The desi n installation of these ositive dis lacement umos results in.

operational pressure pulsationl vibration effects which most probably caused the cracks. Corrective action was to make a weld repair.

2 Modifications to reduce cyclic stresses have been completed on, Unit

~0~

3 and will be completed on Unit 4 during the Spring 1979 refueling.
