In our February 17,11988,11etter, we expressed concerns regarding the uranium.
reconcentration in sludge at' sewage treatment plants and encouraged UNC to apply, D for-an. NPDES permit'to discharge the chemically treated process liquid to nearby surface water. 'Recently, the Environmental Protection' Agency (EPA) approved the' State of. Connecticut's: request to . assume. NPDES authority = over federal facilities.
' Enclosed is a copy 'of EPA's . notice. published in the. Federal-Register on January 30, 1989.:
- Treating the process 1 wastes to ' reduce the quantity of uranium is. a positive step.
to maintain releases of radioactive material in effluents as low as is reasonably j achievable. We strongly recomend,; however, that UNC initiate. an application - )
