SUBJECT:

UNC NAVAL PRODUCTS ADDITIONAL. REMEDIATION-AND SURVEY. INFORMATION, DOCKET 70-371

Dear Mr. Parrott:

The licensee's additional remediation and survey information 'on the septic discharge line and municipal pumping stations (dated September 13,1993) and on the incinerator pad area (dnted September 17,1993) have been reviewed. In our opinion, the licensee's documents provide an

- adequate description of the radiological condition of the subject areas. There were two minor comments.

q

1) The licensee has referenced the Regulatory Guide 1.86 for comparing the survey data. It is more appropriate to reference the August 1987 document," Guidelines for Decontamination of Facilities and Equipment Prior to Release for Unrestricted Use or Termination of Licenses for Byproduct, Source or Special Nuclear Materials."
2) It was not clear whether for the gamma spectmmetry of the soil samples, the licensee had used the same commercial laboratory as in earlier reports.

Following our telephone conversation yesterday, I contacted Mr. Robert Gregg of UNC Naval Products. Mr. Gregg confirmed that the same laboratory was used for the gamma spectrometry analyses. Also, based on our conversation, I requested that Mr. Gregg provide ORISE with a) copy of the video tape documenting the visual inspection of the septic discharge line with a camera probe, and b) sections 2A,2B, and 3B of the excavated piping for confirmatory measurements.

If you have any quesdons regarding this information, please contact me at (615) 576-3355 or Michele Landis at (615) 576-2908.
