Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On January 12, 1979, the Region II office (Mr. A. Herdt) was notified by Carolina Power & Light Company of a potentially reportable item regarding welding defects in embedments purchased for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. Please be informed that as of this date, Carolina Power &

Light Company has not completed its evaluation of this matter as related to reportability under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

It is anticipated that this evaluation will be completed by March 19, 1979, at which time the NRC will be notified of our decision.
