Dear Mr. Denton:

Carolina Power 6 Light Company (CP&L) hereby submits additional information concerning the interaction of Non-Category I piping with Category I piping at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. This information is submitted in response to Safety Evaluation Report Confirmatory Item 5 from the Mechanical Engineering Branch.

Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant SER Confirmatory Item No. 5 Pi in Su orts Confirmator Item:

Evaluate the interaction of Non-Category I piping with Category I piping to the criteria established at the CP&L/NRC meeting of October 24, 1983.

~Res ense:

CP&L has completed its review of the seismic/non-seismic interface anchors utilized at SHNPP. The review was conducted to determine and demonstrate that the criteria as established at the October 24, 1983 meeting between the NRC and CP&L had been satisfied in the SHNPP design. The criteria established in the October 24, 1983 meeting was documented by CP&L letter dated December 1, 1983 (attached).

A review of 1141 piping stress isometrics identified 220 seismic/non-seismic interface anchors. 104 of these anchors were found to be acceptable as designed 60 large bore and 44 small bore. 18 anchors failed the pipe yielding moment analysis 12 large bore and 6 small bore. These 18 anchors had vertical supports only on the non-seismic side of the anchor. Lateral restraints have since been designed on the non-seismic side of these anchors

.such that criterion 2 is satisfied for the 6 small bore anchors and criterion 3 is satisfied for the 12 large bore anchors.

The remaining 98 anchors 7 large bore and 91 small bore had no supports designed on the non-seismic side of the anchors when the study was conducted. These designs are currently ongoing and are being designed to satisfy the criterion 2 (for small bore) and criterion 3 (for large bore).

The effort is currently approximately 90% complete.

CP&L considers this item closed.
