March 11, 1985 This is to confirm the NPDES permit exception at our Surry Power Sta ti on that was reported to you on March 7, 1985. On March 6, 1985, a grab sample for Units 1 and 2 evaporator blowdown (Outfalls 101 and 601) revealed a pH of 8.54. This exceeds the maximum limit of 8.5 for these outfalls.

A grab sample of river water from the station high level intakes on March 5 revealed a pH of 8.53. In addition, analysis of a grab sample of ambient James River water, taken off Hog Point on March 7 revealed a pH of 8.55. Therefore, we feel that these exceptions were due to naturally occurring river water conditions and were not due to any plant processes or lack of treatment.
This is to confirm the NPDES permit exception at our Surry Power Sta ti on that was reported to you on March 7, 1985.
Because of this, no corrective action is planned. In addition, a typographical error was discovered on the January 1985 NPDES Discharge Monitoring Report for Outfall 601 at Surry Power Station. The maximum pH value should read 7.89 rather than 4.89. A corrected copy of the DMR report is enclosed, and we request that your records be changed to reflect this correction.

COR 14-06 March 11, 1985 CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED Mr. Ray R. Jenkins State Water Control Board Piedmont Regional Office 2201 West Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 23230 Surry Power Station - NPDES Permit Exceptions

Dear Mr. Jenkins:

This is to confirm the NPDES permit exception at our Surry Power Sta ti on that was reported to you on March 7, 1985.

Should you have any questions regarding these exceptions, please do not hesitate to contact this department.
