Surry Power Station - NPDES Permit Exception
Dear Mr. Jenkins:
j This is to confirm the information concerning the NPDES permit exception at our Surry Power Station that was previously reported to-you by telephone.
i On April 22, 1986, a composite sample of effluent from Outfall 011, the sewage treatment plant, was collected between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Analytical 4
results received on April 28 revealed a Biological Oxygen Demand (800 ) I 1
5 85.8 mg/1. This exceeds our permit limitation of 45.0 mg/1.
Station personnel believe this exception to have been caused by the introduction of a foreign substance, such as floor wax, to the station's sewage treatment system. As immediate corrective action, air to the skimmers and sludge holding tanks was cut off to provide the maximum air input for the aeration tanks and for return sludge. Also, the station has, as part of its annual training program instructed all employees and contractors not to introduce foreign materials to the sewage system, or station storm drains.
We are currently considering measures to further reinforce this policy.
Should you desire any further information regarding this report, please let us know.
Sincerely, B. M. Marshall Manager e6051gggg{$g888$so
