I INTRODUCTION I The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Ervirenmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, i:hthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a databasc sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the TMINS.

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in September 1986 (Table 1). The following changes in the THINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule vere made during September: electrofishing, originally scheduled for 11 September was I rescheduled for 18 September due to equipment malfunction, however, rain impeded sampling on 18 September. Electrofishing was therefore conducted on 23 September. Sampling (electrofishing) originally scheduled for 25 September was conducted on 30 September to facilitate the previously mentioned schedule changes. Details are provided in the following pages wherein progress is described for each program.

Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

hter Quality Analysis I objective: To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island I Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-vey samples.

1 I

I Progress: Vater quality samples were collected on 17 September 1986 and forwarded to TMI-EC (Table 1). Duplicate water samples I were taken at all stations and forwarded to the EA Engineering, Science and Technology, Inc., Chemistry Laboratory for total dissolved solids (TDS) analysis. U.S. EPA Metnod 160.1 was used to determine total filterable residue (TDS) in samples collected on 13 August 1986. EA Chemistry Laboratory results for 13 August are presented in Table 2.

I Select water quality parameters were also measured at sampling times and locations of the General Ecological Survey.

I Benthic Macroinvertebrates Objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Benthos sampling on 17 September 1986 consisted cf replicate (4) samples taken at each of the three benthos stations (Table 1).

I Ichthyoplankton Objective: To determine species composition, re htive abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

I Progress: Ichthyoplankton field sampling for the 1986 seasoa was completed with the 26 August collection.

I .

I I 2 I

I I Seine I Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-ity of TMINS.

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six samp-ling stations on 10 and 24 September 1986 (Table 1). Fishes taken on 7 and 21 May were identified, measured, and weighed.

I itay se!ne data were tabulated and recorded on length frequency data sheets.

I Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, I occurrence of parasites, anomalics, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of THINS.

Progress: Electrofishing at the six stations was completed on 23 and 30 September 1986 (Table 1). Samples consisted of 126 fish c2 12 species and 53 fish of 15 species collected on 23 and I 30 September respectively (Tables 3 and 4). More fish vere col-lected at Station 4A1 than at any other station on both dates (59 specimens on 23 September and 18 specimens on 30 September).

Station 4A1 also produced the largest number of species, with 8 and 6 species collected on 23 and 30 September respectively.

Pumpkinseed and gizzard shad dominated the catch on both sample dates. Two specimens of special interest verc juvenile American I shad, one of which was collected at Station 10B3 on 23 S.,ptem-ber, and one at Staticn 11B1 on 30 September. Ectoparasiter I 3 I --

. I I observed on fishes collected on 23 September included: anchor vorms (Lernaea) on two white suckers, three pumpkinseed, and one I smallmouth bass; and leeches on two redbreast sunfish. Cysts were seen on two pumpkinseed, one bluegill, and one smallmouth bass; and fungus was seen on one white sucker and one bluegill.

One pumpkinseed and three smallmouth bass exhibited wounds related to angling (e.g., books in mouth, mouth fungus, eye injuries, etc.). Included among the fishes collected on 30 September were: one meskellunge, one golden shiner, one bluegill and one smallmouth bass with anchor vorm.

I Creel Survey Objective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near IMINS.

I Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 9, 14, 22 and 27 September 1986 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 267 anglers whc reportedly fished 560.12 hours1.388889e-4 days
0.00333 hours
1.984127e-5 weeks
4.566e-6 months
, caught 508 fish, and har-vested 134 fish (26% of the total catch)(Tables 5 through 8).

The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per effort (h/e) were 0.91 and 0.24 fish per hour, respectively. Smallmouth bass and channel catfish vere the predominant fishes caught (208 and I 94 specimens, respectively), and harvested (29 and 46 specimens, respectively) by anglers. Most anglets (127), most fish caught (259), and most beurs fished (270.82) were recorded at the Gen-eral Reservoir. Most fisn (76) were harvasted from the York Haven Generating Station, while the highest c/e (2.17) was re-corded at the East Dam. Anglers were predominantly residents of York nr Dauphic Counties and the majority indicated that they I eat at least a portion of their cateb.
